Jenny Mitchell, 32 years old, was the first woman to file a suit in October 2022 when doctors diagnosed her with cancer of the uterus. Her lawsuit claimed her uterine carcinoma “was directly and proximately due to her regular and extended exposure to phthalates, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in Defendants’ hair care products.”

Since then, thousands of women have filed lawsuits against manufacturers of chemical hair straighteners. According to Daniel Nigh, a product liability lawyer, many women are in their 20s or 30s.

“We had a client that developed endometrial carcinoma. As a result of this, she had to undergo certain surgeries and treatments and couldn’t have children. She could have had children before she turned 25. She wouldn’t know that she had to have a baby before 25. So, she’s 25. It was a huge emotional blow to learn that. She had spoken about her plans for the future, including having three children. “She’s not going be able to do that,” Nigh stated.
