Ozempic Lawsuit

Ozempic lawsuits allege that the drug can cause severe gastroparesis ileus and intestinal obstruction and that its manufacturers failed to warn about this risk. The first Ozempic lawsuit for stomach paralysis was filed on August 2, 2023. A federal panel consolidated at least 55 lawsuits on February 2, 2024.

Overview

Why are people filing Ozempic Lawsuit?

The most recent Ozempic lawsuits were filed by people who took the drug but later developed gastroparesis. The food moves too slowly from the stomach into the small intestine. Food may even stop moving in the intestines altogether.

Gastroparesis can cause vomiting, nausea, abdominal bloating and pain, severe dehydration, acid reflux as well as malnutrition or weight loss. Undigested food can remain in the stomach, hardening.

“During this terrifying obsession with semaglutide use, especially its off-label use, higher dose for weight loss, I have been extremely worried about the fallout from the use of this drug class,” said JJ. She is a former Certified Pharmacy Technologist who uses initials to protect their privacy.

JJ said to Drugwatch: “They are marked with black boxes, but all of my friends use them without thinking.” “[They] reported bouts with nausea, vomiting diarrhea and constipation, which sounds to me like evidence for gastroparesis – which can be fatal.”

Ozempic (also known as semaglutide) belongs to a class of drugs called the GLP-1 Agonists. Lawyers are investigating claims of gastroparesis and ileus, as well as intestinal blockage, for other drugs from this class.

Other GLP-1 antagonists that are being named in claims such as Ozempic suits include:

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide)
  • Rybelsus tablets (semaglutide tablets
  • Saxenda (liraglutide)
  • Wegovy (semaglutide)

The FDA will add an Ozempic alert in September 2023 for intestinal obstruction, intestinal blockage and ileus. Ileus occurs when the intestines stop working properly. These claims are accepted by lawyers as well.

Ozempic lawsuits claim that since FDA approval of Ozempic was in 2017, Novo Nordisk did not include gastroparesis in its prescription information before September 2023. The company warned the public about other Ozempic-related side effects but did not warn them of the severe risk of gastroparesis.

The plaintiffs claim that there is no cure for the condition and are suing for damages, including loss of quality of life, medical expenses past and future, and other damages.

PEOPLE WHO FILED OZEMPIC LAWSUITS

Jaclyn’s Bjorklund filed a complaint that combines both an Ozempic lawsuit and a Mounjaro suit. She claimed to have suffered gastrointestinal issues after using Ozempic. She used Ozempic for more than a full year before switching to Mounjaro in July 2023. She suffered from gastroparesis, which caused her to vomit a lot. Her teeth fell out as a result.

Bjorklund had to go to the hospital several times with symptoms such as stomach pain, gastrointestinal burns and vomiting whole food just hours after eating. She is now taking additional medication for excessive vomiting.

Laura Marrero sued Ozempic in December 2023 after taking the drug from May to October 2023. She suffered constant vomiting during this time. Marrero was hospitalized in August 2023 with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and rectal bleeding.

Her nurse practitioner told her to stop taking Ozempic as soon as possible in October 2023 due to severe side effects, including persistent vomiting.

Who is Eligible to File an Ozempic lawsuit?

If you have suffered from gastroparesis after taking Ozempic to lose weight or for any other reason, then you may be eligible to file an Ozempic suit. Lawyers are currently accepting cases for people who have suffered from severe gastroparesis that has resulted in vomiting lasting four weeks or longer.

You may not be eligible for Ozempic if you have had a gastric bypass, gastric banding, or gastric sleeve surgery prior to taking Ozempic. Lawyers also do not take cases for Ozempic for cancer patients.

Only an Ozempic attorney can determine if you are eligible to file a suit. Contact a lawyer immediately for a case review. This will preserve your right to file a lawsuit and claim compensation. You may have a short time limit to file if you live in a state that limits the filing period.
