Rounup Cancer Lawsuit

The people who file Roundup cancer lawsuits contend that the weed killer led to the development of cancer. In 2020, Monsanto (now Bayer) was able to pay nearly $11 billion to settle the majority of Roundup lawsuits. By April 2024, 4,281 Roundup cancer suits were pending on the California Roundup MDL.

Overview

Why Are People Filing Roundup Lawsuits?

People are filing Roundup lawsuits claiming Monsanto’s herbicide led to their non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma or related cancers. Some claim that Bayer and its Monsanto subsidiary did not inform the public about cancer risks. They focus on Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate.

“Regarding recent lawsuits attempting to link glyphosate to non-Hodgkin lymphoma, it’s essential to understand that while there’s an ongoing debate, some studies suggest a correlation,”

The lawsuits also assert that the company deliberately misled people about Roundup’s safety.

The “Monsanto Papers” — documents from internal corporate communications that were presented in court — showed that the company might have been hiding Roundup’s cancer-causing link for several years. Bayer purchased Monsanto in 2018 and claims it is confident that Roundup is safe. However, the company stopped selling residential formulas by 2023. Commercial formulas remain available.

The ban or restriction of glyphosate is facing issues, both due to its widespread use in agriculture and the absence of alternative options that are as effective.

Injuries Named in Roundup Lawsuits

The injuries caused by Roundup lawsuits are mainly related to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, which is a cancer that affects white blood cells. However, lawsuits also discuss several other related cancers.

Injuries Claimed in Roundup Lawsuits

  • Anaplastic large Lymphoma
  • B-lymphoblastic Lymphoma
  • Burkitt lymphoma
  • Chronic lymphocytic Leukemia

The link between glyphosate and cancer is controversial, in large part due to the differing views of regulatory agencies. The World Health Organization classifies glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen;” however, The Environmental Protection Agency is not in agreement.

A meta-analysis independently released in Mutation Research shows a 41% increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin Lymphoma among agricultural workers exposed to significant quantities of glyphosate.

“Through my legal practice, I’ve witnessed the devastating impact glyphosate exposure can have on individuals and their families, underscoring the importance of addressing this issue comprehensively,” Rosenfeld declared.

Bayer has more than 800 studies submitted to the EPA to verify that Glyphosate “can be used safely and does not cause cancer.”

Stories of Lawsuit

Example of a Recent Roundup Lawsuit

Ohio resident Gene Wyatt became one of the latest defendants of the current Roundup lawsuit. Wyatt was the first plaintiff to file a Roundup case against Monsanto on behalf of the Southern District of Ohio. Wyatt’s case was later moved into the Roundup MDL in the Northern District of California.

Wyatt claims that he was exposed to Roundup when he was using it in the course of his work for The Ohio Department of Transportation at Washington Courthouse, Ohio, from 2001 until 2011. A significant part of Wyatt’s job tasks is spraying Roundup using a plant applicator to control weeds’ growth. In January of 2015, five years following the exposure to Roundup that he had received for ten years in his job, Wyatt was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic leukemia. Wyatt’s suit claims that his Leukemia resulted from the exposure he received for ten years to Roundup.
